Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) uses medications to treat addition to opoids as well as alcohol. The medications are FDA-approved, and prescribed to to reduce cravings, allowing the patients to stay on their path to recovery. MAT is one component of a comprehensive treatment plan, which includes counseling and other behavioral health therapies to provide patients with a whole-person approach.
The following medications are available based on the client's individual needs:
Suboxone
Suboxone is an opioid antagonist. That means that it will negate the effects of opioids like heroin and fentanyl, reduce withdrawls and cravings, making it easier for the client to quit.
Sublocade
Sublocade is a medication that contains buprenorphine and is injected by a treatment provider as a liquid and, once inside the body, turns to a solid gel called a depot (dee-poh). The depot gradually releases buprenorphine at a controlled rate all month. Buprenorphine is delivered at sustained levels. This means that the levels of buprenorphine in the blood stay consistent throughout the month. When the medicine in Sublocade, buprenorphine, attaches to opioid receptors in the brain, other opioids are less likely to attach, reducing withdrawl symptoms and cravings.
Vivitrol
Vivitrol is an opioid antagonist, which works by blocking opioid receptors in your body. It also suppresses the amount of alcohol you feel like drinking by changing how your hypothalamus, pituitary gland and adrenal gland work together. Vivitrol blocks the intoxication and euphoria or 'high' that alcohol and opioids cause. It also blocks the pain relief that opioids provide.
Naltrexone
Naltrexone is a medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat both alcohol use disorder and opioid use disorder.
